In der Probe wurden Schimmelpilzgifte nachgewiesen. Alternariol 32,6 µg/kg (ppb) wird als mutagen eingestuft. Tenuazonsäure (TEA) ist ein Insektizid mit einer hohen akuten Toxizität. Erhöhte Gehalte eines oder mehrerer dieser Toxine deuten darauf hin, dass von Schimmel befallene Tomaten verarbeitet wurden. Der TEA-Gehalt der Probe liegt bei 2713 µg/kg und ist wesentlich höher als der Gehalt in vergleichbaren Produkten (0 bis 291 µg/kg). Gemäß eines wissenschaftlichen Gutachtens der EFSA aus 2011 wurde für TEA ein Schwellenwert von 1,5 µg/kg KG pro Tag abgeschätzt (TTC-Wert). Eine 70 Kg schwere Person nimmt 105 µg mit einer Portionsgröße <40 g auf.
