In Denmark we have had a disease outbreak in a local canteen related to a high content of lectin in red kidney beans from Turkey. 16 out of 50 canteen guests got ill. Please see the analytical report attached where high amounts of lectins is proven in the frozen read kidney beans. According to the Swedish supplier, the information that followed the product from the producer stated that the kidney beans are "precooked". However, when the Swedish supplier contacted the Turkish producer directly he emphasized that the beans had been soaked for 12 hours and only heat treated for a short period afterwards. Hence, the product cannot be consumed without further precooking as expected for a "precooked product". This was also the reason for the disease outbreak in Denmark; the beans had only been heat treated in the oven for about 20 minutes before it was served to the canteen guests. High amounts of lectins in this meal were detected as well.
