An online investigation was initiated following a consumer complaint. The operator offers multiple food supplements containing cannabidiol (CBD) for sale. The products include, among others, CBD oils, CBD capsules and CBD gummies intended for oral consumption. Currently, only hemp seed and some of its derivatives (e.g. hemp seed oil) have a proven history of consumption as a food before 15 May 1997 in the European Union. But no significant history as a food ingredient has yet been demonstrated for hemp extracts and CBD extracts. They are thus considered novel foods and are consequently banned on that basis.
