Phenibut is a phenyl derivative of γ-aminobutyric acid and a selective agonist of the GABA-B receptor (similar to baclofen) and phenethylamine. In higher doses, it activates the GABA-A receptor and stimulates dopamine receptors. Phenibut crosses the blood-brain barrier, thus demonstrating anti-anxiety, antidepressant, and nootropic (cognitive-improving) effects. Nootropic substances stimulate the metabolism of the central nervous system, thereby activating mental processes such as the level of consciousness and memory. These substances are used for disorders of consciousness of metabolic origin, organic syndromes, poisoning, convalescence after head injuries or inflammation of the central nervous system, and mental retardation. Therefore, there are significant doubts about the safety of this ingredient in foods, including food supplements. There is no data confirming that this ingredient was ever used for human nutrition in European Union member states before May 15, 1997.
