Following a consumer complaint, we identified a food supplement on the web shop Naturitas.be containing an extract of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds. In Belgium, the competent authority considers extracts of Griffonia simplicifolia containing 5-HTP as novel food. In addition, our national legislation (the Plants Order) restricts the placing on the market of this product as a food: Griffonia simplicifolia is on our list of plants which are not allowed for use in or as foodstuffs. This means that any part, preparation or fruit of those plants must not be consumed as such and must not be used for preparing foodstuffs. It is a forbidden plant in Belgium.
