As a result of chronic iodine deficiency, lumps can form in the thyroid gland, particularly in older people. If these are suddenly activated by an excess of iodine, as can occur with extremely iodine-rich algae products, it can lead to an overactive thyroid (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism) with life-threatening effects on the metabolism.
