Chronic iodine deficiency may result in the formation of nodules in the thyroid gland, particularly in older people. If these nodules are suddenly activated by an excess supply of iodine, as may occur in the case of seaweed products with an extremely high iodine content, the result may be an overactive thyroid (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism) with life-threatening effects on the metabolism.
