Laut International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) ist der Stoff Ethylenoxid als krebserzeugend der Gruppe 1 eingestuft (IARC Monographs, 2012, Sup. 7, 60, 97, 100f). Ethylenoxid ist außerdem nach Verordnung (EG) Nr. 1272/2008 als erbgutschädigend (Muta. 1B), fortpflanzungsgefährdend (Repr. 1B) und krebserzeugend (Carc. 1B) eingestuft. Das BfR empfiehlt zur Abschätzung des Gesundheitsrisikos die Verwendung der „Aufnahmemenge geringer Besorgnis“, welche für Ethylenoxid mit 0,037 μg/kg KG/Tag ermittelt wurde. Sie kann dem Risikomanagement als Hilfestellung bei der Priorisierung der Risikominderungsmaßnahmen in Hinblick auf Umfang und Dringlichkeit dienen. Die Aufnahmemenge geringer Besorgnis wird bei Kindern und bei Erwachsenen deutlich überschritten (EFSA-PRIMo-Modell, Version 3.1).
