Ofloxacin is not approved for use in edible fish in Switzerland. This active ingredient is not listed in the VRLtH and has not been subjected to a risk assessment. According to Article 4 (2) (c) of the VRLtH, foods containing active substances that are not approved may not be placed on the market. We would like to point out that the unauthorized use of Ofloxacin and the detection of residues of this active substance in food must be assessed as particularly critical in the context of the problem of antibiotic resistance. Ofloxacin belongs to the class of fluoroquinolones. According to the WHO, these are among the "highest priority critically important" antibiotics in human medicine and are indispensable for the treatment of infectious diseases in human medicine. Therefore, these antibiotic groups should generally be used very restrictively, and only in exceptional cases that demonstrate the necessity of using these antibiotic classes, and only if there is no other alternative.
