- El usuario se coloca las gafas para observar el eclipse solar. Al estar el filtro por debajo del mínimo de transmitancia (excesivamente oscuro), el usuario solo ve oscuridad total y no consigue localizar el disco solar. Como reacción previsible, y estando de cara al sol, el usuario se desliza las gafas hacia la frente, las ladea o se las retira un instante para encuadrar la posición del sol con la intención de volvérselas a colocar inmediatamente. Durante ese intervalo sin protección, los ojos quedan expuestos directamente a la radiación solar directa (radiación visible e infrarroja/ultravioleta). Se produce una lesión química o térmica en las células foveales de la retina.
