Risk and measures

Risk or hazard
Takata airbag inflators are subject to a compulsory recall . Airbag inflator: As the airbag gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade. If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision triggering the airbag, or if the airbag mis-deploys, the metal inflator housing may explode/rupture under too much internal pressure. If the defective airbag inflator ruptures, the airbag can go off with too much explosive force causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle. There have been serious injuries and deaths caused by faulty Takata airbags.
Recommendations
Check the manufacturing date of your vehicle. You will find this on the European type approval label, located on the driver's side B pillar and visible when you open the driver’s door. Check if your vehicle is affected at  www.recall.bmw.com.au . You will need your vehicle's registration number or VIN number. Do not drive your vehicle under any circumstances if your vehicle is affected. Immediately contact your preferred authorised BMW dealer to schedule the replacement airbag. Your dealer will arrange to have your vehicle towed to the workshop so that you do not need to drive the vehicle. The airbag replacement and towing are free of charge.
