What AESAN is

The Agencia Española de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutrición is an autonomous Spanish public body attached to the ministry responsible for consumer affairs. Its institutional website describes it as Spain's reference body for food-safety and nutrition risk assessment, management and communication.

AESAN is Spain's national contact point for rapid information-exchange networks including SCIRI, RASFF and INFOSAN.

What AESAN publishes

AESAN's public alerts area communicates information for citizens when food already on the market may pose a serious and immediate risk. AESAN says these notices are intended to prevent consumption of the affected product and are normally accompanied by withdrawal action.

The website separates general-interest alerts, alerts involving undeclared allergens or other substances, and food-supplement alerts. AESAN also explains that not every notification handled through administrative alert networks is published as a consumer notice on its website.

Scope and coverage

AESAN operates at Spanish national level and its public information concerns food safety and nutrition. National coordination links the competent authorities and supports exchanges with European and international networks.

A notification in an administrative network is not automatically a public AESAN alert; the agency applies its own public-communication criteria.
